The Milgis Medical Clinic & Community Ambulance

MEAK, together with the Milgis Trust refurbished and re-established a medical clinic and a dispensary for the Samburu community in the Milgis area, located between the Matthew’s Range and the Ndoto mountains in the Samburu, 15 hours away from Nairobi.

The clinic is served by a nurse and the MEAK supplied 4WD ambulance, the best vehicle to handle the wild terrain. The ambulance is a highly valued vehicle and is in constant use for a wide variety of community projects, including, but definitely not limited to:

VACCINATIONS & ADVICE

Visiting surrounding villages to vaccinate children & give family planning advice

HOSPITALS

Transporting women with difficult pregnancies and people with life threatening situations such as snake bites, for example, to the nearest hospital in Wamba, a 6hr drive away

WATER REPAIRS

Supporting nearby water projects by transporting repair engineers and parts to repair and maintain the supply of fresh water

Water access projects together with the Milgis Trust

MEAK and the Milgis Trust maintain a large series of water pumps throughout the Matthews Range area of the Samburu. These pumps are in areas selected together with the communities that benefit from the clean water. They are maintained by the local community with the financial support of both organisations. The water projects are designed with both humans and animals in mind, with troughs to allow thirsty animals to drink, preventing contamination of the clean water.

Responding to need within the community, elephant-friendly wells have been created with broad, shallow ramps to allow the elephants to access water easily. In the past, the elephants dug deep wells and often baby elephants fell into the wells when trying to drink, necessitating complex rescue operations to save these animals.
