WHAT WE DO
Eyes, Dentistry, Feeding and Community Programmes
and Children’s Hearts
EYES
The wholly Kenyan MEAK eye team travel to remote areas of Kenya seldom visited by other teams. They diagnose eye conditions, distribute eye medication, reading and sunglasses and dispense eye care advice.
Blind patients diagnosed with cataracts have their sight returned in a specially created theatre on site. Children are transferred to Nairobi for surgery at no cost to their families. Patients are transferred from their villages by MEAK and accommodated and fed on site. Once recovered, they are returned back to their homes.
We conduct five to eight surgical missions per year, which includes pre-mission screening and post-surgical review of patients.
MEAK is invited by local government and collaborates with local conservancies and area chiefs to ensure the greatest number of people can be helped per mission. As of December 2023, over 17,000 cataract and other ophthalmic procedures had been carried out

DENTISTRY
A wholly Kenyan dental team works alongside the eye team in remote locations, utilising the same logistics for ease of planning and cost-effectiveness.
They perform mostly dental extractions to ease debilitating dental pain. Before MEAK, many resorted to literally knocking their teeth out with rocks, such was the unbearable pain and the lack of dental services in rural areas of Kenya.
As of December 2022, over 4,000 dental procedures had been performed.

FEEDING & COMMUNITY PROGRAMMES
When the Covid-19 pandemic struck in early 2020, travelling to and within Kenya became virtually impossible.
Not wishing to suspend all activities, MEAK turned its attention to supporting underprivileged communities those who found themselves in dire need due to debilitating drought and then flash-flooding.
Concentrating largely on the Samburu famine area the MEAK team provided a three to four week supply of staple foodstuffs to nearly 104,000 very hungry people.
In addition, on witnessing first-hand the extreme poverty, the team supplied blankets, cups and plates and repaired dilapidated dwellings as part of their holistic approach to supporting local communities in need.
AGRICULTURAL TRAINING AND BOREHOLE CREATION
In our most recent project, MEAK has funded the creation of a borehole in at the JM Goodhope school in Ndaragwa, 4 hours from Nairobi. This borehole is producing 20,000/L of clean water per hour which has completely transformed the community.
Young girls are no longer having to fetch water from distant streams. Health and hygiene within the school and the community has improved with access to clean water. Together with newly installed handwashing facilities and toilet blocks, this is reducing the incidence of water borne diseases.
The abundance of water has created an energetic and very successful farming programme where fruit and vegetables are being grown to supplement the diets of the school children and the local community. Together, these improvements are attracting more enrolments to the school and enhancing education as children also learn sound agricultural and hygiene practices

CHILDREN’S HEARTS
MEAK carries out heart surgery on babies and children born with congenital heart disease. In Kenya, as in much of East Africa, there are very limited options for these children.
MEAK also conducts medical and teaching clinics in Mombasa and Kilifi. This helps the local paediatricians diagnose and care for their patients with congenital heart disease and our team review our previous surgical patients.
The MEAK heart team is comprised of a team of medical professionals from the Evelina London Children’s Hospital who volunteer their time to help Kenyan children
As of December 2023, MEAK has carried out 22 heart missions with over 480 children receiving life-saving cardiac surgery. In addition, 1000’s of children and families have benefitted from clinic review and heart scans in the outpatient clinics.
