The MEAK eye team have carried out another very successful eye mission in a very remote and medically-underserved area. The wholly-Kenyan team of 16 medical professionals, including an ophthalmologist, cataract surgeons, nurses and a dentist travelled by road to Sololo, a journey of over 700km.

2,526 patients were reviewed with 241 patients having cataract surgery to restore sight, in addition to procedures to relieve trachoma and remove foreign bodies.

Over 700 pairs of reading glasses and 20 pairs of photochromatic glasses were distributed. 2,000 bottles of vitamin or antibiotic eye drops were dispensed to help reduce the risk of eye infection in these arid, dusty areas, which if left untreated, could cause blindness.

The dental team examined 659 people and carried out over 500 tooth extractions to remove debilitating dental pain.
